The Biggest Scam in Red Light Therapy

The Biggest Scam in Red Light Therapy

Many products claim to deliver the benefits of red light therapy. With similar wavelengths and high irradiance, it's easy to assume they're all equally effective. However, the reality is far more complex. Many products flaunt these specs yet still fail to deliver real therapeutic benefits. The secret lies in the quality of the light, its delivery, and how it penetrates the skin. Let's explore the differences and how to identify the real, science-based solutions from the scams.

Wavelength (Measured in Nanometers - nm)

The wavelength of light determines its color and depth of penetration into the body. Different colors of light have different effects on the body. Red light used for therapy falls within a specific wavelength range that has been scientifically proven to produce beneficial biological effects.

  • Therapeutic red light: The therapeutic wavelengths for red light generally range between 630 nm and 700 nm. Among these, 640 nm is particularly effective for medical applications. This wavelength can penetrate 5-10 millimeters into the skin and tissues, making it ideal for stimulating cellular functions like energy production, healing, and regeneration.

  • Non-therapeutic red light: Other red lights, such as those used in decorative or non-medical devices, may emit wavelengths that are outside the therapeutic range or might not be concentrated enough to have any biological impact. Lights in this category might still be red in color, but they don't provide the same energy levels or penetration depth as therapeutic wavelengths.
